WP11: 11 T Dipole

WP11 bees are responsible for the design and construction of the 11 T dipole magnets and of the new connection cryostats for the dispersion suppressor regions of the LHC. What is an 11 T dipole magnet and what is it for?

It is a 6-meter-long magnet made of superconducting Nb3Sn, which will allow the nominal field of the magnet to be increased from 8.3 T in the LHC dipoles to 11.2T in the 11 T dipole at the same operational current and with less length. These 11 T dipole magnets are connected in series with the main dipoles of the LHC machine. Thanks to these new dipoles, the WP11 bees can obtain the llongitudinal space needed for the installation of additional collimators in the LHC lattice as part of the upgrade of the LHC collimation system.

WP11 bees, who take care of these magnets, are working side by side with bees from WP5.
