The word radiation is close to HL–LHC. Why? Because the HL–LHC’s luminosity goals pose several challenges that come from the increased radiation environment.
The WP10 bees have to face such challenges. That is why they evaluate the possible mitigation measures and assess the radiation environment in the tunnel and in the service areas.
They are also in charge of the radiation-matter interaction simulations and of the energy deposition studies, which affect almost all the cells of this huge beehive.
For an adequate radiation monitoring, these bees are in direct contact with the activities of Radiation to Electronics (R2E), a program launched by CERN at the end of 2010 that includes the study of the design of radiation tolerant components.
